Unité

This short film was shot on the roof of Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseilles in the south of France.

This significant building built between 1947 and 1952 was the blueprint for post-war European high-rise residential architecture, though few subsequent schemes come close to this. The building houses apartments, offices, shops, and the roof is used, amongst other things, as outdoor space for the children from the kindergarden. Whilst staying at the onsite hotel, I filmed much of the building during my stay.

This short sequence was not staged and it ends abruptly when it becomes apparent that 55 years after Corbusier realised this utopian complex, it is now inappropriate to film children playing.
